Self Tutoring = setting and achieving self-chosen personal or professional learning goals outside the requirements of college courses.

Concepts from class to examine and assess the affects/usefulness of in your self-tutoring:

Multiple modes of learning

  • Understanding the multiple modes of learning
  • Could you have learned without utilizing all of the multiple intelligences you used? How did each contribute to your success?

 Mistakes help us with skills and concepts

  • Could you have learned without making mistakes?
  • How did you feel about making mistakes?

Multimodal resources assist our self-tutoring

  • What resources did you utilize--podcasts, videos, simulations, games, interactive in person practice sessions, office hours, study groups?
  • Describe how easy, confusing, helpful or not were each that you used and if you would use it again to learn something new.

Student being coached while learning a new sport

Self-tutoring flips the educational experience for future teachers. While you are preparing to tutor and teach younger learners, you are experiencing being tutored as you pursue your self learning goals.

Self-chosen learning reveal the importance of active engagement and supportive coaching in any educational endeavor.

In TEAMS this semester, you submit at least 20 hours of self-chosen learning.

In past semesters, three main types of self-tutoring/self-chosen learning projects emerged:

1) self-learning with a personal coach or tutor;

2) self-learning with a group of peers; and

3) self-learning using digital technologies.

Self-tutoring with technology was the most often chosen approach.
